NOMINEE: The Rev. Calvin F. Lyons Sanborn
CONGREGATION:
Diocese of Maine
NOMINATED BY:
The Rev. Paige Blair, St. George’s, York Harbor
BIOGRAPHY:
Calvin is a life-long "Mainer."  Born in West Baldwin, his father’s hometown, he and his four brothers were raised in the local Methodist Church, where his Baptist mother was the Superintendent of the Church School.  He attended St. Joseph’s College, a small Catholic institution in Standish, Maine, where he studied Psychology and English, and it was during these college years that he discovered the Episcopal Church, which was to become his spiritual home.

Now, deeply committed to the Episcopal Church, and a priest, given his religious and spiritual heritage, it is no surprise that he is also deeply committed to ecumenism and to promoting peace, justice, and reconciliation between denominations, between people of different faiths, and especially between the various expressions of faith within our own tradition.
He is a graduate of Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he completed his Master of Divinity with Special Competencies in Biblical Studies and Contemporary Society.  His work over the
years includes two years as a Psychiatric Technician with Adolescents at a hospital now known as Spring Harbor and two years in the Office for Student Affairs at St. Joseph’s College.  He was the Assistant to the Chaplain at Boston University, while in seminary and also spent two years as the Director of Youth Ministry for the Alewife Deanery in the Diocese of Massachusetts, where he created and maintained two faith-based after-school programs for "youth at risk," and directed a Summer Vacation Bible School and Leadership Development Program.  In 2002 he returned to Maine to serve as the Assistant Rector of Saint George’s in York Harbor.

Currently, he is attending General Theological Seminary, where he is completing a Master of Sacred Theology in Christian Spirituality.  While he is completing his degree, he is also the part-time Chaplain to Episcopal students at New York University.  When he finishes in May, he plans to return to Maine to continue ministering here.

Calvin has served on the Diocesan Anti-Racism Committee and the Provincial Network for Christian Education.  He is also currently the first alternate deputy to General Convention and attended General Convention 2003, where he was active with the young adult presence and represented the Diocese of Maine from time-to-time on the floor.  He would be deeply honored to serve as part of Maine’s Deputation to General Convention 2006.

NOMINEE: The Rev. Levering Sherman, Jr.
CONGREGATION:
All Saints Church, Skowhegan
NOMINATED BY: The Vestry and members of All Saints, Skowhegan
BIOGRAPHY: The members of all Saints Church in Skowhegan nominate the Rev. Levering Sherman as Clerical Deputy representing our diocese to the General Convention of ECUSA, to be held in Columbus, Ohio June 13-21, 2006. Father Sherman has expressed to us his willingness to represent the Diocese of Maine in this capacity.

Lev has served the diocese in the past as: first chair and organizer of the Communications Committee; Chair of the Technology Committee; Commission on Diocesan Operations; Committee on Aging; Committee for Missions; Board of Directors of the Diocesan Resource Center; consultant in interim ministries (Central Maine congregations). He currently represents the diocese as Clerical Deputy to the Provincial Synod (Province I, New England) of the Episcopal Church, is the chair of the Diocesan Committee on Spirituality and the Environment, and is a representative of the Diocese on the ecumenical organizing-team in Central Maine, the Kennebec Valley Organization.

Lev has been vicar of All Saints Church in Skowhegan since August of 1997. He was vicar of St. Barnabas in Augusta from November 1989 to August of 1997. Ordained to the priesthood in Western North Carolina in 1973, Lev has maintained a dual-ministry throughout his career; first with counseling and public mental-health positions, and later in the realm of Public Television and educational media. In addition to his role as priest in Skowhegan, he is currently Coordinator of Developmental Technologies and Educational Media at the Maine State Library in Augusta.

"I have always been keenly interested in the issues and realities of the church’s mission across local, denominational, and geographical boundaries. I have enjoyed the opportunity to broaden our communication and participation in Episcopal Church activities at the Provincial level here in New England, and would feel honored to expand this experience to the level of the national church. Programs such as our provincial group-insurance, and the Harvesters organization supporting small-congregation ministries are but two examples of the success of such cooperative efforts. We need to carry these examples of unification to our national delegates in times of such drastic division."
